Natural Gas Customers

Natural gas is odorless in its natural state. We add a disagreeable smell to alert you if any gas should escape. Gas leaks can occur in faulty appliances, loose connections, gas service lines (inside and outside), or from gas mains.

Gas leaks must be reported to the Utility at once!

IF YOU SMELL GAS

Even if your house is not equipped with gas appliances, take the following precautions:

1. Call City Hall at (641) 333-2228. If after hours, please call the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office at (641) 333-2929.

2. If the odor is very strong and you are indoors, open windows and doors to ventilate. GO OUTSIDE and call the utility from a neighbor’s house.

3. DO NOT turn electrical switched on or off – sparks can cause combustion.

4. DO NOT light matches, lighters, cigarettes or other sources of combustion.

PIPELINE SAFETY REGULATIONS

You may not be aware of it, but there may be buried natural gas pipelines on your property that Lenox Municipal Gas neither owns nor maintains.

This pipe is referred to as customer-owned buried pipe. Lenox Municipal brings gas to your property through a pipeline that is connected to your gas meter. After the gas reached your meter, there are a variety of pipes that are connected to the gas appliances on your property. These pipes are owned by and should be maintained by you. Some examples of this kind of pipe are the pipes connecting your meter to your furnace, water heater or even underground pipe that runs to a natural gas grill or to a garage.

  • Lenox Municipal Gas does not maintain customer-owned buried pipe.

  • If the customer’s buried pipe is not maintained, it may be subject to the potential hazards of corrosion (rusting of metallic piping) and leaking.

  • Buried pipe should be periodically inspected for leaks, and buried metallic piping should be periodically ispected for corrosion. If any unsafe conditions are found, the pipe must be repaired.

  • Before digging around any buried gas line, you should locate the gas line in advance and use only hand tools to uncover the line.

  • If you need assistance in locating, inspecting or repairing your line, please contact Lenox Municipal Gas or your plumbing and heating dealer for a cost estimate.

BEFORE DIGGING

Before digging, call 811 for location of buried lines. There is no charge for this service.  Please allow 72 hours for location. If you have any questions please call Lenox Municipal Natural Gas System at (641) 333-2228 or Lenox Municipal Utilities at (641) 333-2550.
